Merit: Equality & Distinction as an Anti-Corruption Mechanism?
Vahan Bournazian and Open Society Foundations-Armenia are pleased to continue the Causes and Consequences discussion series. Causes & Consequences has been an attempt to explore the interrelationship between individuals and society, our subjective understandings and our collective attempt at approximating objective realities, as well as the tools and concepts that we employ to define our world. During this discussion series we have considered new understandings about individual identity, the competitive and cooperative aspects of human nature, and how these factors relate to the interplay between egalitarian and hierarchical frameworks, rights and power.
As the last session in this current, pilot series of discussions entitled 'causes and Consequences' we discuss the merit mechanism and its potential for balancing competitive and cooperative forces in human interaction to the benefit of individuals and societies as a whole, as well as the safeguards necessary to the system, such as transparency, participation and accountability.
