Surrounded by mountains, 25 kilometers from the Spanish border in the South, 15 km from the ocean to the West and 25 km from Bayonne to the North. Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, or in basque “Senpere”, is also known by its beautiful Lake 2 km from the centre of the village. It covers 12 hectares and its recreational base allows the practice of many water sports. Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle’s dominant economy is agriculture and tourism. The village is connected by a bus line to the city of Saint-Jean-de-Luz (15 000 inhabitants), located on the Atlantic coast south of the towns of Biarritz and Bayonne, and accessible by the A63 motorway and the railway Bordeaux-Irun.
The Saint Christophe school is composed of two modern buildings: the school building and the boarding house. The school building contains a documentation and information centre, a conference room and a computer room.
The volunteers will be accommodated at the boarding house, which is divided into two units, for boys and for girls, where each one will have a single room. The boy’s room is equipped with a bathroom. At the boarding unit for girls, the female volunteer will share a bathroom with a female educator. There is also a common space that allows the students to relax during their free time. Whether they are internal, external, or semi-residential, they might use the billiards, table football, darts… In the girls unit is a lounge with a television screen. Hosted in the boarding house, the volunteers will have to respect the internal rules as the students and the staff.
The volunteers will take their meals at the school restaurant and will receive money for the weekends and vacations in order to manage themselves their meals if they wish. Pocket money, language support, public transport, all administrative tasks and the volunteer’s follow-up will be managed by the organization.
#Activities of a Volunteer
The learning opportunities for both volunteers are numerous: they will participate in the life of our high school and discover the professions and trainings we offer (aquaculture, landscape development and natural areas).
Their active participation in the “foyer socio-éducatif” activities will help to improve their skills in animation and communication. The volunteers will be able to develop their creativity and contribute to the current activities with their own ideas. They will learn teamwork, gain social and civic skills. By their assistance to the management of international cooperation projects, they will discover project management, institutional stakeholders and our local and international partners.
The activities in which the two volunteers can take part, as well as the activities they will be able to create, are:
- Promotion of European youth mobility programs: information on the various actions, organisation of a "European day", themed workshops,...
- Intervention during the foreign languages teaching (occasionally) to present their countries and their mother tongues
- Participation in the team meetings in charge of European cooperation projects and assistance to partnership networking
- Participation in accompaniment of student’s external activities
- Involvement in the activities of the " foyer socio-éducatif " association: organisation of cultural, sports and social activities with the students, carried out on Wednesday afternoons
- Participation in the developping of local activities open to the village and the promotion of local products (event "Aquaval")
- Participation in the activities on environmental topics (fishing, hiking, theme exhibitions, movies, picture or blog reports,…)
- Assistance to the students responsible for the production of tropical fish (aquariums workshop)
