Self-determination: A Right Against Power
Open Society Foundations-Armenia is pleased to continue the Causes and Consequences discussion series with a new discussion entitled “Self-determination: A Right Against Power”.As part of this discussion we will explore the concept of rights in contrast to the use of force or exercise of power, and we will consider questions of consistency when relying on a rights framework internationally while not achieving a rights framework domestically.
As a reminder, in this discussion series we explore connections between ourselves and others and reconsider the frameworks we employ for perceiving our realities. Each session begins with a presentation and then invites participants to engage in reflective discussion. Our mutual goal is to perceive of our everyday relations in a new context and to share with each other in a respectful manner our thoughts on both the causes and consequences of our social interactions. As a community of equals participants agree to consider divergent points of view without considering such different ideas to be an attack on one’s personal identity, and agree not to advocate ideas that negate the equality and human dignity of others or the identity of a group.
Presenter and moderator is Vahan Bournazian an attorney and adjunct associate professor teaching and researching in the field of human rights. Born in California, he repatriated to Armenia in 2004.
The discussion will be held in English.
