Journalism for Future Challenges
Journalism for Future Challenges is a programme for early career journalists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine who are looking to expand their investigative reporting skills, knowledge of international law and politics, and professional network.
Up to 25 participants will be selected to participate, and all will be fully funded.
This intensive training programme is taught by international experts from renowned newsrooms and focuses on teaching cutting-edge, updated tools and methods for improved investigative journalism.
The sessions will cover topics such as basic investigative reporting, planning and managing an investigative project, an overview of how organized crime and corruption works, personal security, advanced research on the internet, encrypting, source protection, ethics, and new social media as a platform for publicity.
The programme is organized by the Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga in cooperation with the Organized Crime & Corruption Reporting Project.
Who Should Apply?
Early career journalists with a strong interest in investigative journalism. Prior work in investigative journalism is not necessary, but some general journalism experience is required.
Residents or citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine between 20 and 35 years of age.
Applicants should be fluent in English.
The programme is funded by the Swedish Institute.
The programme will take place in three separate modules:
June 8 – 13, 2015
August 17 – 21, 2015
November 23 – 27, 2015

The funding covers:
Travel and lodging
Tuition and instructional materials
Visa costs
Coffee breaks, breakfast (at the hotel), lunches
Opening and closing dinners for each module
In order to be considered, you must:
be a resident or citizen of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine
be an early career journalist looking to gain more experience in investigative journalism (prior work in investigative journalism is not necessary, but some general journalism experience is required)
be between 20 and 35 years of age
have a strong interest in investigative journalism
be fluent in spoken and written English
be in possession of your own computer, since information security is an important part of the course
