International Conference “Self-Defense of Van - 100”

“Vaspurakan” Compatriots’ Union, the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of National Academy of Sciences, Armenia, in collaboration with the Institute of History and the Institute of Oriental Studies, NAS RA are organizing an International Conference dedicated to the Centennial of Van heroic defense, as well as to the 2870th anniversary of the first record about Van city.

As is known, the Armenian Genocide was accompanied not only by enormous massacres but by self-defense battles as well. The self-defense of Van (by old calendar: April 7 – May 3, 1915) ended in victory. The power, created later at the head of Aram Manukyan, and in 1917-1918 – by Kosti Hambardzumyan, was the first Armenian political formation of the 20th century.

The secret of these successes was not only the spiritual strength and organization of Armenians; it was also the result of consolidation and unification of the Armenian political parties: The Armenian Revolutionary Federation, The Armenian Democratic Liberal Party, The Social Democrat Henchakian Party, The Armenakan Party, being the most significant sacrament of the heroic battle of Van. During the whole process of the self-defense actual party solidarity was present in Van; party craze and its undesirable impacts had completely vanished.

The outcome of Van-Vaspurakan self-defense were about 200,000 saved people, who, because of the withdrawal of the Russian army in July of 1915, after having some losses, emigrated from their native land. Resettling in different countries around the world, Armenians of Vaspurakan, while resolving self-organizational issues, established also Compatriots' Unions which function in Armenia, Iran, Lebanon, France, Russian Federation, the USA, etc. In particular, the “Vaspurakan” Union of Armenia, created already in 1981 (registered in 1990), organizes annual field events near the monument to “Eagle of Vaspurakan”. In 2010 was held a three-day international conference (and in 2013 released its proceedings) to celebrate the 2865th anniversary of the first record of the city of Van.

The conference is dedicated to Van battle for existence, the unique symbol of heroic self-defenses of the Armenian Genocide years; also it continues the topics put forward at the conference of 2010. Confirmed by the written sources, Turushpa-Tushpa-Van was the most ancient city in Armenian Highlands, which existed uninterrupted more than twenty eight and a half centuries. In such status it is also one of the unique cities of the whole world. Since its foundation Tushpa-Van was the capital city of Van Kingdom (Urartu), the Yervanduni Armenian kingdom – successor of the Van Kingdom. In 10-11th centuries it was also the capital of Vaspurakan Kingdom. Van maintained its role of Armenian center in the late Middle Ages too. During the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th Van was the commercial, handicraft and cultural center and the most Armenian-populated city of Western Armenia. Conference is dedicated not only to the history, culture, archeology, ethnography, folklore, art and architectural heritage of the first capital of Armenia, but also to the whole Vaspurakan region.
